Course in Critical Writing
During the attendance, students are given a number of prompts and questions. The mode of response is always through writing. Students are taught how to freewrite and use creative mapping techniques. Students also engage in extensive peer review and small group discussion. This fosters community and methods of interpersonal engagement essential to dialogistic teaching models.
During the interim period between meetings, students are asked to polish the draft that was initiated on location. This is handed to the instructor at the commencement of the next session and may be typed or carefully handwritten. This will result in 10 short essays, the last one written during the final group meeting.
As part of the course, one of these essays is expanded upon and polished further. Some colleges may accept the format as a writing sample.
Upon successful completion of the course and all assignments, students receive a Certificate of Completion and a written letter about their personal qualities during the course. This may serve as a letter of recommendation to postsecondary educational institutions.
Cost: $26/session ($260 for the whole course), payable in any format that is of facility for the students and their families. Non-resident Salem students over 16 require PEM membership.
